Re: Additional Polling Engine

Jeff (borges1120), it occurred to me that there IS an easy way to reassign nodes to other Additional Polling Engines after you add one or more APEs in the future:

  1. Go to Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes
  2. Use the drop down to Group by Polling Engine, or by Vendor, or any method that shows you nodes you'd like to move to other polling engines
  3. Select the nodes you want moved to the new polling engine
  4. Click Edit Properties
  5. Scroll down to Polling
  6. Click Change Polling Engine
  7. Select the new APE to which you'd like these nodes assigned
  8. Click Change Polling Engine and you've successfully completed the task

I manually distribute nodes across seven APE's to keep the APE's running with less than 10,000 elements on each one.  I built ACLs on all the nodes that allow only my APE's to talk with the nodes via snmp; that makes moving nodes between pollers simple.

The alert definitions are all in XML, so there is no existing function to report on them in a human readable format.

The best work around I have seen in the past was to go to the last page of the edit alert screen where they display all the trigger/reset conditions and action and just copy and paste that into the alert description, then create a report with the alert names and descriptions.

Hi topkick - both of your questions are covered in the NPM Admin guide.   For the "dashboards" you're (generally) looking for how to work with Widgets and Views.  Also look at creating custom views (basically dashboards) and pinning them to the main drop down menus.    I have found that it helps to make a copy of a default view and then messing around with that before making it available for everyone.  For Maps you'll be working with the SolarWinds stand-alone program called Network Atlas.  The atlas download link should appear a the bottom of any default map.

As far as I can tell LWAP's cannot be filtered based on group/view limitations.  You could probably get away with doing it via custom report/custom table options though.

I just had to do a similar report for all of my SNMP nodes in SWQL studio. You can skip the Where clause if you need all nodes.

SELECT TOP 20000 IPAddress, ObjectSubType

FROM Orion.Nodes

WHERE ObjectSubType LIKE 'ICMP'

ORDER by 'IPAddress'

Here is how I look that info up. If you go under settings and manage nodes you can add it to your view. Then you can sort by it or if you group by vendor then sort by polling method.

Or you can use the report writer. Select all nodes and custom table. Then select the node name and polling method.

The node may have been moved, is there a message for the volume being added to another poller?

If you put the events and/or audit events widget on the volume details page (if not already there) you should be able to see the full picture.

It should also show on the node details page if it was moved from one poller to another.

Just to answer dsp's question (bit late I know) the username and password you make up yourself. Create it on the routers/switches similar to how you would a local user account, and then put those same credentials into Orion's web interface when adding the node.

This is the command for an IOS router to create the user on the device;

snmp-server user SolarWinds SNMP-AUTH v3 auth sha 4uthPassw0rd priv aes 256 Pr1vPass0rd

You could use a different combination on every router, but it's much easier to use the same throughout, and then use NCM or other config manager to change the password every few weeks/months.based on your security requirements.

Map you can add through network atlas application installed on solarwinds server.

categorized all the routers into a group and then click edit dashboard > add widget node all-Trees

.

Select group of routers and add submit.

OK thanks for this ... I suspected there wouldn't be a direct solution... so to speak.

Hi Topkick,

If you've not already found them, check the online courses at https://customerportal.solarwinds.com/VirtualClassrooms/#

I'm fairly new to Solarwinds myself and have found these to be of immense value as they have given me the knowledge to do what I need.  Plus they are a good way to gain Thwack points too.

Good luck.

Hello All,

I want to create monthly report on interface Utilization in graphical format.

Is it possible in Solarwinds to define business hours and pull out graphical report during business hours only.?

Thanks in Advance...!!!

There's obviously no "one-size-fits-all" answer to this (or heck, even a one-size-fits-most!). Some specifics that would help offer you choices that will fit your needs:

  • how many devices or elements or flows are at this remote site
  • how fast is the connection? how big is it?
  • when you say "cost-effective", what kind of budget do you have.
    • Yes, I know, "free would be nice". But if mgmt can only afford free then the devices in the remote location aren't very important.
  • what kind of information do you need - do you need NetFlow? Hardware status/performance? Just availability?
